Partial care meaning, piece by piece
It is a licensed level of care, not a marketing label. The two halves of the name each carry a fact worth separating.
- Care
- Full clinical treatment: group therapy, individual counseling, psychoeducation, and, in programs like ours, on-site psychiatric evaluation and medication management.
- Partial
- Your day, not the quality of care. You attend roughly 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, then go home to your own bed, family, and life.
A comprehensive, structured, non-residential, interdisciplinary treatment and psychiatric rehabilitation program in a community setting.

Think of it as the middle rung on a ladder.

Partial care delivers daily clinical intensity without removing you from your life, which is exactly why hospitals discharge patients into partial care programs as a step-down.
Who is partial care for?
Adults 18 and older living with conditions like major depressive disorder, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, and other affective disorders, especially when symptoms are too acute for weekly therapy alone.
Many programs, including The Center's Partial Care program, also run a co-occurring (MICA) track for adults managing a mental health condition alongside substance use, where mental health is primary.
Common paths into partial care:
- Stepping down from a psychiatric hospitalization
- A referral from a case manager or county agency
- A family realizing weekly therapy is not holding
- Transitioning from parole, probation, or a group home
What does a day in a partial care program look like?
A typical day at The Center runs 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM: breakfast on arrival, morning group therapy, individual counseling or psychiatric appointments as scheduled, a catered lunch, afternoon skills-based groups, then home.
Free transportation to and from the program is available to our clients. Coverage varies by location, so call us to confirm we can pick up at your address.
Is partial care the same as a PHP?
No, and the difference matters more than most websites make clear.

- A Partial Hospitalization Program. Hospital-based.
- Partial care
- As licensed in New Jersey, a day program in an independent clinic, not connected to a hospital.

Advanced Behavioral Care Services is licensed for Partial Care; it is not a PHP provider.
How long does partial care last?
There is no fixed calendar. Length follows your treatment plan and progress, reviewed by the clinical team.
What a good program should have is an honest endpoint. At The Center, clients who complete the program graduate with a certificate. If a program cannot describe how you will know you are done, ask why.
Does insurance cover partial care?
In New Jersey, Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare cover partial care at licensed providers, and many commercial plans do as well. At The Center, every form of Medicaid is accepted and coverage is verified before your first day.

The NJ FamilyCare benefit is shaped for exactly this level of care: it covers up to five program hours a day, 25 hours a week of mental health partial care (NJ Department of Human Services), a full clinical week.
