Advanced Behavioral Care Services opened in September 2000 as a small mental health outpatient program in Ocean County, New Jersey. Clients started calling it The Center almost immediately, and the name stuck.
The organization
One licensed outpatient organization for adults, running two programs out of one building in Toms River.
Today the organization runs two licensed divisions from a 12,000 square foot facility in Toms River. The Center is a behavioral health Partial Care day program for adults living with serious mental health conditions. Substance Use Services is an evening Intensive Outpatient and Outpatient program for substance use disorder.
Twenty-five employees run both programs, and around 90 percent of our clients come through the day program.
What has not changed since 2000: adults 18 and older, treated as people rather than case numbers, with the practical barriers handled by us instead of left to them. The ride to the day program, where we cover the address. The meals in the middle of it. The Medicaid paperwork.
Not to be confused
Ours is a common name, and search results mix us up with organizations we have no connection to. So, plainly:
We treat adults, 18 and older.
We are not a children's or adolescent service.
We provide outpatient behavioral health care and substance use treatment, in Toms River, New Jersey.
We are not an ABA or autism services provider, and we do not offer applied behavior analysis.
We work out of one office, and have since 2000.
We are not a national chain, and we are not affiliated with the other organizations that share part of our name.
If you are looking for services for a child, or for applied behavior analysis, we are not the right place. We would rather say so on this page than on the phone.
Since 2000
The early years were behavioral health only. But the adults walking through the door were rarely dealing with one thing at a time, and mental illness and substance use travel together more often than not.
Most programs make you pick a lane. We refused to.
A dedicated Substance Use Services division grew alongside the day program, and co-occurring treatment became a specialty here rather than an exception.
Then the promises stacked up, one at a time.
In practice
Compassion, empowerment, optimism, independence, community, quality of life. Every treatment center lists values. Ours have a test: what do clients say when nobody is scripting them?
They really cared about me. I wasn't just another person with another problem.
Known by name
We keep groups small on purpose, so every client is a person here rather than a file.
The staff here really helped me get back on my feet.

Licensing
Licensed by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, one license per program.
Both programs are led by credentialed directors (MSW, LCADC, CCS), introduced on their own program pages.
We do not publish a staff roster or staff photographs. That is a deliberate safety decision for the people we serve, not an oversight.
